Have you met Pearl Cooley? She is a seriously tough lady. Pearl has Cystic Fibrosis, a genetic disease that mainly affects the digestive system and lungs. At present, there is no cure. Pearl has had not one, but two lung transplants, the most recent in June 2017. She is an incredibly motivated person, and has been working hard on improving her fitness with her new set of lungs. She has set a goal to run her first 5K on Saturday, April 14th. Come take advantage of your lungs and join Pearl in this endeavor and in support of CF research. All ages are welcome, we will be running and/or walking a 5K route in the trails of Hanlon Creek (route sheet will be provided). Suggested donation of $10 going directly to CF Canada, please give what you can. Join us directly afterward at 10am for Defy's Open House celebration.

Hi everyone. I thought I would take a moment to introduce myself before the big event. My name is Pearl Cooley and I am 21 years old. I was born and raised in Guelph, Ontario. I have an older sister, Desiree Furtado, and a wonderful nephew, Nixon. I have 2 dogs, Felix, an Australian Shepherd/ Golden Retriever, and, Zeke, a Labrador Retriever. I also have a one eyed cat, Sloan (yes, as inSloan, AKA McSteamy). When I was 2 months old, I was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis. CF is a genetic condition that affects the respiratory and digestive system. At 18 years old, I went into complete respiratory failure, requiring a double lung transplant. March 24, 2015 I had my first double lung transplant.

Those lungs gave me 2 great years. Unfortunately, in February 2017 I went into organ rejection. Thankfully, I received a second set of lungs on June 4, 2017. Since then, my health has been continuously getting better. I have been able to be back in the gym and working towards running a 5K. I have been working withLando at Defy Sports Performance & Physiotherapy to continue working towards my fitness goals and getting my body back to "normal". I look forward to sharing more about my story with you over the next couple weeks leading up to the big event and meeting all of you April 14 at the open house. <3
