You're all cordially invited to discuss challenges and opportunities in academic careers with Riccardo COMIN, PhD, Assistant Professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Lukas CHROWSTOWSKI, PhD, Professor of Electrical and Computing Engineering at UBC, silicon photonics researcher, SiEPIC Program Director.  Being fascinated by condensed matter physics and materials science, Dr. Comin built his career around the idea of exploring new materials, with his scientific interests always being tied to a challenge. In his research so far he explored the liquid-to-glass phase transitions, and high-temperature superconductivity -- two of the grand problems in modern physics. Dr. Chrostowski's research interests are in optoelectronics, nano-photonics with an emphasis on silicon photonic integrated circuits (PICs).

He is also interested in the design, modeling, and nanofabrication of lasers, primarily Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (VCSELs), for applications in high-speed optical communications, optical interconnects and biophotonics. Our guests will talk about their academic careers, challenges they encountered with, opportunities they obtained and will provide you with tips that can contribute to enhancing your careers, especially if you are thinking about launching a career in academia. Both guests will be open to answer your questions, ponder with you about your dilemmas and encourage you on your journey if needed. Refreshments will be offered. Tickets are free for SBQMI students and students of science and engineering, but registration is required.
